GEMS4

The GEMS4 programme is working with Nigeria’s wholesale and retail sector and commenced operations on August 1, 2012. It is a five-year project implemented by a consortium led by Coffey International Development. The overall objective of GEMS4 is to design and implement a market development programme that aims to create and sustain 10,000 full time equivalent jobs and increases in incomes for 500,000 people through the wholesale and retail sector. In doing so, GEMS4 is utilising a making markets work for the poor (M4P) approach combined with a focus on women’s economic empowerment, to improve the performance and inclusiveness of key market systems in the sector that are important to poor people, particularly women.

The GEMS programme is targeted in four states in Nigeria: Kano, Kaduna, Lagos and Cross River 2. The GEMS4 programme, by design, anticipates expanding beyond these states where impact can be maximised. Initial expansion includes the trading centres of Aba in Abia and Onitsha in Anambra and to further expand to address intra-and inter-state trade. The project is currently staffed by a full time team working in Lagos, supported with a team from Coffey International Development’s UK office.
